Changing member to another user account

Hi SFC,
I am raising a a question that has been raised before, regarding changing members to another user account. You have provided a work-around, but I am wondering if the workaround then changes the historical records, which I am a little hesitant to do. Our current workaround has been asking members who want to change memberships to provide a second email address, but occasionally they don't have one. Is there a way to fix this in the system so a workaround isn't needed at all?
Thanks,
RG

I assume you mean you are trying to move a user from one membership to another, is that correct? Is this a situation where they were sharing the membership with one person and now want to share it with someone else? Can you provide details? It's always easiest to advise a course of action if we know specifically what you are trying to do.

    Hi qroth,

Yes, I was trying to move a user from one membership to another. I have
solved the problem at hand of the one particular user who wanted to do
this and didn't have a second email address (which is our usual
work-around) by using your method of creating a fake email address for
    her in the original membership.

However, the problem of users wanting to change memberships and being
confused or not able to do so because of the link between the original
membership and the email address is one that we encounter quite
    frequently.

My question is a system-based question - is it possible for you to
unlink emails from memberships systemically at the root/database level
so that we stop running into this problem in the first place?

I suspect that the answer is no, but we encounter this problem
frequently enough that it seemed like a question worth asking.

    Thank you,

    Hi Reeve:

The Member Assembler system used the email address as the users unique identifier so changing that would unfortunately mean doing a complete overhaul of the software, which, as you can imagine, is not likely.

When you say you run into this problem frequently - are these general people who are sharing a membership with someone and are frequently switching back and forth between who they are sharing it with?

    Hi Q,

That's what I figured about the nature of the Member Assembler database,
    but thought I would ask.

In terms of members switching around, our clientele comes primarily from
a small college campus so a) many members already know each other and b)
there's a fair amount of transition due to the nature of a college
environment. So it's not that there are any particular individuals who
switch back and forth a lot, but that current members sometimes want to
change their partnerships if a former partner leaves the campus or
graduates or something of that nature.

It looks like the only way to handle that is manually as we have already
discussed. It's not a big deal - I just thought I would make the
    inquiry.

    Thanks for your help,

    Reeve
